Delaware Contract / Worksite Organizer:

Job Description:
The Contract/Worksite Organizer’s responsibility is to build and maintain Doctors Council units in Delaware and to assist organizing throughout the northeast. This includes actively building relationships with current and future members, representation activities, bargaining, policy and political responsibilities, coordination with other SEIU union locals, as well as coordination with other unions on issues of importance to the members.
You will work daily with our membership. This position answers questions about contract rights, as well as filing grievances and doing preparation for arbitration to enforce our contract rights. In addition, this position prepares for negotiations through working with the membership, doing bargaining surveys, creating proposals and working with the bargaining committee.

The Contract/Worksite Organizer will also explore new organizing interests in the region in coordination with the National Organizing Department. This position requires learning physician and provider specific organizing and contract issues, and integrating these issues into all aspects of organizing. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work in a team environment.

Responsibilities
Representation:

  • Timely communications with our membership (phone, emails and newsletters) and onsite visits covering all shifts.
  • Representing our membership through grievances and arbitration; running meetings and Delegate elections.
  • Bargaining and bargaining preparation, including preparing bargaining surveys, proposals, and working with the bargaining committee.
  • Training and developing rank and file leaders.
  • Establish and maintain a departmental representative/steward structure at each facility; developing member activism through committees and engagement.

Organizing:

  • Move members into action through contract negotiation process, contract enforcement, community and political activities, and ongoing organizing work.
  • In coordination with National Organizing Department, identify, recruit, and engage physicians and providers to grow union membership and strengthen collective power.
  • Identify and train physician leaders to take an active role in new organizing and workplace advocacy.
  • Lead organizing efforts on key workplace and industry issues, coordinating collective actions, campaigns, and union initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain strong organizing networks, ensuring effective communication, participation, and representation within healthcare systems.

Advocacy and Member Involvement:

  • Advocacy on behalf of and with the members and their patients on relevant issues, including participation in community, political and union events.
  • Maintain workplace committees, such as Collaboration Council and Safety Committee;
  • Coalition building around relevant public policy issues.
  • Engage members in advocating with healthcare system and political leadership on issues which are important to our membership and the future of doctors' work as well as healthcare generally.
  • Being active in communities and politically, public speaking, and writing on issues relevant to the members, using members whenever possible.
  • Building strong relationships with other union leaders and maintain Doctors Council profile as an active, publicly respected union in Minnesota and on health care generally.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with public health, policy and advocacy organizations related to health care.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive organizing experience, ideally as a Field Representative or Organizer at a Healthcare union.
  • Commitment to the labor movement and healthcare reform.
  • Proven ability to carry on the responsibilities of the job.
  • Experience leading membership meetings and leadership development.
  • Ability to develop relationships with members, future members, political, administration and union leadership.
  • Effective written and communication skills.
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues.
  • Ability to assess information and evidence and deal with conflicting/changing priorities.
  • Ability to think strategically and exercise a high level of judgment.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities.
  • Computer literate.
  • Familiarity or willingness to achieve strong familiarity with doctor issues and healthcare policy.
  • Law degree or attorney qualifications are a plus but not required.

Experience: At least five (5) years’ experience required in representing/organizing workers, preferably in healthcare.

Evening and weekend work will be involved. You must be a self-starter with the ability to work under supervision. Driver’s license and insurance required. Travel may be required.

Salary and benefits: Salary range is between $70K – $80K annually depending on experience. Excellent full benefit package includes 100% employer paid self and dependent medical and dental, as well as 100% employer paid defined benefit pension plan. This is a staff union position.
